The Rangers made two notable cuts as they close in on their Opening Night roster.

Gabe Perreault and Scott Morrow were officially assigned to Hartford on Friday afternoon.

Both youngsters impressed in camp, but this doesn’t come as a surprise.

For Perreault, it was a bit of question mark where he would begin the year after his brief cup of coffee at the pro level down the stretch last season.

The former first-round pick looked very good during preseason play, finishing second on the team with four points over five games, but the staff decided it would be best to continue his development in the AHL.

Morrow, acquired from the Carolina Hurricanes as part of the K’Andre Miller trade, has been able to make a strong first impression with his new organization.

He was able to show off his offensive potential during the preseason, but is still working to earn the trust of the new coaching staff in his own zone.

The Rangers’ defense is also a bit crowded at the moment, but if they struggle early and Morrow takes some steps forward skating down with Hartford, perhaps he could work his way into the mix.

“We’re really excited about both of those guys,” Mike Sullivan said. “We think they had terrific training camps, they certainly made an impression on everybody in the organization — we believe they have the potential to have a lasting impact on the New York Rangers.

“We’re just trying to make the best decisions we can to try to help that process and get these guys as close to pushing their way onto the roster as they can.”
