A former Maple Leafs defenseman finds himself back on waivers and at a career crossroads that could potentially lead to the end of his NHL career.
With NHL rosters in the process of being finalized ahead of the 2025-26 season, there weren’t many big surprises on the waiver wire on Sunday, but the Maple Leafs did place four players on waivers and saw another ex-Leaf landing there as well.
Former Maple Leafs defenseman Justin Holl has been placed on waivers by the Detroit Red Wings, and it’s not the first time.
This isn’t new territory for the 33-year-old blueliner. After being drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the second round of the 2010 NHL Draft, Holl played just two games for their AHL affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs, before being let go and eventually signing with the Toronto Marlies.
He would spend nearly a decade in the Maple Leafs organization, splitting time between the Marlies and Leafs, before finally earning a regular NHL role. After his stint with the Marlies, he played over 250 games for the Maple Leafs.
Despite his size, right-handed shot, and penalty-killing ability, Holl’s time in Toronto ended on a sour note. While he was a dependable presence at times, costly turnovers and inconsistency in defensive zone exits led to frustration from fans. By the time the Maple Leafs had the option to let him go, fans were ready to leave that chapter behind.
Now in Detroit, Holl’s $2.25 million cap hit could make it difficult for another team to take a chance on him, even as a depth option. However, given his experience and steady presence when slotted into the right role, a team looking for a reliable bottom-pairing defenseman could see value in claiming him.
Whether Holl clears waivers, finds a new home, or has his NHL career end, it’s another test in a career that’s been anything but smooth.
