If Steve Yzerman is serious about maintaining the quality of the Detroit Red Wings prospect pool, he should claim goaltender Michael DiPietro, of the Boston Bruins, who was put on waivers today.

As the Detroit Red Wings’ goaltender core continues to age, the team will need a deep prospect pool to build on it.

Goaltender Cam Talbot won’t be in the NHL forever, and as it stands now, he’s in the twilight of his career, even after posting a .901 save percentage in 2024-25. He’s aged 38, and Marc-Andre Fleury retired when he hit 40.So, they’ll need someone to back up John Gibson, who is the future starting goalie of the Red Wings, until proven otherwise.

According to a report from Elliotte Friedman, he doesn’t seem him passing through waivers back to the AHL, at least back to Providence.

32 Thoughts, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said, «I have no doubt teams will be looking hard at [him]. There will be teams this week curious to see what the Bruins do.»

The Detroit Red Wings would be wise to claim Michael DiPietro

Michael DiPietro has proven in the AHL that he’s ready for a look in the big show, considering his performance last season ended with an impressive 26-8-5, 2.05 GAA, and a .927 save percentage.

It’ll be a competition for a spot where he lands, but he could be a solid backup to John Gibson whenever Cam Talbot decides to retire.
