Former San Jose Sharks defenseman Jake Walman has signed a seven-year contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers.

This is not the only piece of business Edmonton is doing today

Hearing the Oilers are also closing in on a 7x7M extension with the Pride of Armour Heights, Jake Walman

Big day for them— Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC) October 6, 2025

On the same day Connor McDavid signed a two-year discount extension ($12.5 million AAV), Walman signed a long-term deal worth $7 million a season.

When the Sharks traded Walman to the Oilers, they received a conditional 2026 NHL Draft first-round pick. The condition of the draft pick was that if the Oilers fell into the top 12 picks of the 2026 Draft, they would have the option of sending an unprotected 2027 first-round pick.

If the Oilers trade their 2027 first-round pick during the 2025-26 season, the Sharks will automatically get the 2026 first-round pick from Edmonton regardless of the position.

The former San Jose Sharks defenseman became one of the Oilers’ most reliable players in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. In 22 games, Walman had two goals and eight assists. He finished as a +9, one of the best in the league during the postseason by a defenseman (6th).

Walman was basically given to the Sharks for free by the Detroit Red Wings prior to the 2024-25 season. Along with a solid player, Detroit also sent Tampa Bay’s second-round pick in the 2024 draft.

The Sharks would select defenseman Leo Sahlin Wallineus with the second-round pick.
