Colorado Avalanche News & Notes:

As the Avalanche were preparing for their season opener, longtime Colorado defenseman Erik Johnson announced his retirement on October 1, 2025. With two years remaining on his current contract, superstar defenseman Cale Makar was eligible for an extension starting July 1, 2025, with some industry experts expecting the AAV to be in the 17-18 million a year range. Jack Drury won the third-line center role in training camp to replace the traded Charlie Coyle.

Los Angeles Kings News & Notes:

The Kings will start the 2025-26 season knowing that it will be the last for Kings’ icon Anze Kopitar, who announced his retirement at the end of the season. Los Angeles is trying to get star winger Adrian Kempe signed to an extension, but the two sides are not close on a deal. The Kings want to get the contract extension wrapped up before the season starts, but unless there is significant movement from both sides, the talks will have to continue during the season. Finally, Head Coach Jim Hiller could be on the hot seat if the Kings don’t get off to a good start to the season.

Players To Watch:

Colorado Avalanche

Gabriel Landeskog returns for his first full season since 2021-22. Having their captain and emotional leader back for a full season should provide a boost to an Avalanche team that should be considered one of the favorites in the Western Conference.

Los Angeles Kings

Anze Kopitar will want to go out on a high note, and the Kings should be a tough out in the postseason as the team rallies around Kopitar. How will the contract distraction affect Adrian Kempe’s play as the season rolls along and it remains unsettled?
