The San Jose Sharks could potentially name a team captain on Wednesday.

Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky says the team is still going through discussions on what they want to do regarding the vacant captaincy.

“We’re still going through it. We’ll have some decision before the first game,” Warsofsky said. “We’ve got a lot of leaders in there. A lot of veterans who have been around. We’re excited about where we’re going in that area.”

Throughout Sharks training camp, Warsofsky has often mentioned veterans and their leadership whenever he’s been asked about the captaincy.

The San Jose Sharks head coach clarified that there is no guarantee that the team will name a captain. There is still an option to go with all alternate captains, similar to last season.

“We’re still going through that. I would say we’ll have a decision probably by tomorrow,” Warsofsky said.

Logan Couture was the captain and was around the team. With a young squad, an on-ice captain might benefit the Sharks more.

Tyler Toffoli could be the most likely candidate to be named captain, but other options remain. Mario Ferraro, who has worn a letter since the 2021-22 season, is another potential option.
