Jonathan Drouin crosschecks Connor DewarJonathan Drouin of the Islanders crosschecks Connor Dewar of the Penguins.

It didn’t take long for the officials to review the play and uphold a major penalty and game misconduct for New York Islanders forward Jonathan Drouin on Thursday night. And it didn’t take long for the NHL Player Safety department to follow up.

The league announced that Drouin faces a disciplinary hearing Friday for crosschecking Pittsburgh Penguins forward Connor Dewar in the head during Thursday’s 4-3 Penguins win at PPG Paints Arena.

With 14.2 seconds left in regulation and the Penguins holding onto that one-goal lead, there was a scrum around to the side of Penguins net after a New York scoring chance. Dewar got in a couple shots to Drouin’s shoulder, and Drouin responded with a heavier crosscheck that caught Dewar in the cheek area and sent him to the ice. Dewar did not appear to be injured.

The officials indicated a major penalty, and after they huddled briefly, they confirmed a five-minute crosschecking penalty and a game misconduct.

Drouin scored earlier in the game for the Islanders.
