The worry over whether the Detroit Red Wings could sustain their quality power play from last season to this season has thus far been unfounded. The Red Wings have scored one power play goal in each of the first four games for a 4-for-15 (26.7%) PP efficiency. That ranks Detroit fifth in the NHL. Last season, the Red were fourth (27%).

The key, according to Patrick Kane, has been mixing up how the power unit operates from game-to-game, depending upon the opponent.

“Everyone has to be a shooter,” Kane said.

Kane says assistant coach Alex Tanguay, the power play whisperer, does a good job studying opponents to decide what will work.

“Lot of different options can set it up on both sides of the ice,” Kane said.
