OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – On this day in 1997, it was opening night for the University of Nebraska – Omaha’s hockey team.
More than 8,300 people packed into the Civic Auditorium that night to mark the first of 19 consecutive sellouts.
First Alert 6 obtained video from the Maverick’s first “Frozen Four” appearance in 2015.
Back in ‘97, officials called UNO’s matchup with the University of Manitoba bigger than anything the Civic Auditorium had ever hosted. This included five sold-out Elvis Presley concerts in 1977.
Manitoba would go on to win the first game, an exhibition, three goals to two. The Mavs’ would finish the season 12, 18, and 3.
They now play on campus after Baxter Arena opened its doors in 2015.
