The Canadiens’ biggest off-season acquisition was defenceman Noah Dobson, who was acquired in a trade with the New York Islanders after signing an eight-year, US$76-million contract with an annual cap hit of US$9.5 million, which makes him the highest-paid player on the team.
Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes gave up 23-year-old forward Emil Heineman and two first-round picks (16th and 17th overall) at this year’s NHL Draft to acquire the 25-year-old Dobson.
On this Hockey Inside/Out Show bonus episode, The Gazette’s Stu Cowan is joined by former Canadiens teammates and 1986 Stanley Cup champions Chris Nilan and Rick Green, who give their thoughts on Dobson’s play early in the season and weigh in on whether Hughes gave up too much to get the right-shot defenceman.
Green also speaks about what it was like when he was traded from the Washington Capitals to the Canadiens on Sept. 9, 1982, along with forward Ryan Walter, in exchange for Brian Engblom, Doug Jarvis, Rod Langway and Craig Laughlin and what it was like adjusting to new teammates and defence partners.
Look for two more Hockey Inside/Out bonus episodes with Nilan and Green talking about the limited ice time Arber Xhekaj and Patrik Laine have had to start the season and then they let us know who their funniest teammate was. They both picked the same guy.
