BOSTON. (WILX) – No. 3 Michigan State hockey took the first of two games on the road at No. 1 Boston University, 4-2, in front of a national TV audience on ESPN2 on Friday night.
In the first period, one second after a Spartans’ power play expired, defenseman Matt Basgall fired a shot that was tipped in by forward Charlie Stramel to put MSU in front 1-0.
Later in the period, the Spartans were shorthanded when freshman Eric Nilson stole the puck and wound up with a breakaway opportunity that he converted to make it 2-0.
Still in the first period, leading 2-1, Gavin O’Connell found freshman Cayden Lindstrom behind the Boston defense on a long pass and Lindstrom converted the opportunity to put MSU in front 3-1.
Shane Vansaghi added another goal to make it 4-1 before the Spartans eventually won 4-2.
The win is the Spartans’ second of the season and first over Boston University since a 2013 game at Munn Arena.
Game two of the weekend is set for Saturday at 7 p.m.
