Former Vancouver Canucks Fan Favorite Signs Professional Tryout as 2025-26 Season Gets Underway

A former Vancouver Canucks fan favourite & 450+ game NHL veteran has signed a professional tryout (PTO) with the 2025-26 season just getting underway.
The 2025-26 season is officially underway across North America with the National Hockey League and American Hockey League dropping the puck on their respective campaigns, while the ECHL will follow suit this weekend.
At this time of year, we don’t see too many free agent signings or PTOs because teams have already settled on their respective opening night rosters, but for one former Vancouver Canucks, he’s going down the tryout route to remain on this side of the Atlantic Ocean.

Motte’s PTO with the Florida Panthers didn’t go as planned as he was released by the club just before opening night of the NHL’s 2025-26 season and became an unrestricted free agent.
“It appears Tyler Motte has been released from his PTO; he did not practice on Monday, and his locker spot at the IcePlex is no longer there.” George Richards of Florida Hockey Now reported.
A little over a week after becoming a free agent again, the St. Clair, Michigan native is returning to the Florida Panthers organization.
In a press release on Wednesday, the Charlotte Checkers, AHL affiliate of the Florida Panthers, announced that they’re bringing Tyler Motte in on a professional tryout.
“The Charlotte Checkers have signed forward Tyler Motte to a professional tryout (PTO).” the club said.
Motte, 30, brings 455 games of NHL experience to the Checkers, 196 of which came as a member of the Vancouver Canucks between the 2017-18 and 2021-22 seasons.
It’s unclear when Tyler Motte will make his debut with the Charlotte Checkers, but it could come as soon as tomorrow night as they host the Iowa Wild for the club’s 2025-26 home opener.
