Detroit Red Wings: ‘Like how we won in different ways’

Another rookie celebrated his first goal – and also his second – as the Detroit Red Wings celebrated a fifth straight victory.
Their matinee on Sunday, Oct. 19, against the Connor McDavid-led Edmonton Oilers started uneventfully but by midway through, amped up the entertainment factor. Dylan Larkin contributed two goals and goalie John Gibson won his second straight start as the Wings claimed a 4-2 victory secured by Emmitt Finnie’s second goal of the game, into an empty net with 1:22 to play.
The Wings (5-1-0) have not lost since their opening game.
Lucas Raymond returned after missing two games with an upper-body injury, but Patrick Kane sat out after sustaining an upper-body injury Friday. His absence led to rookie Michael Brandsegg-Nygård being moved up to the second line to play with Marco Kasper and Alex DeBrincat.
A fast, clean first period had attempts by Andrew Copp and Michael Rasmussen among the better of the Wings’ seven shots on Stuart Skinner, while John Gibson saw just three shots.
Getting started in the second
It took till nearly halfway through the game before fans at Little Caesars Arena had something to celebrate, when Larkin’s one-timer from the high slot, off a pass from Ben Chiarot, sank in behind Skinner. There were louder cheers a few minutes later when, just after the Wings had killed off a penalty, Finnie delivered his first NHL goal, one game after fellow rookie Axel Sandin Pellikka notched his.
Finnie scored at 11:54 when he found Jacob Bernard-Docker’s rebound and buried it from out front.
Trading scores
The two-goal lead was halved within a minute when Noah Philp answered for the Oilers, but restored at 17:05 of the second period when Larkin fired through traffic to net his second of the game, with Finnie picking up his third assist of the season.
Leon Draisaitl pulled the Oilers back within a goal at 7:33 of the third period when he was alone to the left of the net and had time and space to redirect Brett Kulak’s pass.
