It’s been a long road back to the NHL for Joe Labate, but the veteran forward could be on the verge of a comeback to his former team, the Vancouver Canucks, if he suits up in game action for the team, it will mark 8.5 years since he played last, which was a 4-1 against the Anaheim Ducks in 2017.
“With the win, Vancouver improved to 4-2-0 on the season and now sit third in the Pacific Division, but there is some concern for a few players on the roster, including forward Filip Chytil, as it appears the club has been bit by the injury bug.”-Jaxon
Joe Labate might make historic comeback to the Vancouver Canucks.
Jeff Patterson on X posted about the potential historical comeback for Labate, as many forwards on the Canucks are dealing with injuries.
if Joe LaBate gets into game action for #NHL #Canucks it will be 8.5 years between appearances for the team. Last played for Vancouver March 28, 2017 vs ANA
Labate now 31, has spent the intervening years grinding through the hockey world’s winding path. After spending some years in the Canuck organization, he continued his career in the AHL, and even a year in the KHL in Russia. He earned the reputation of being a physical player, with good leadership qualities, and a strong work ethic. His persistence and dedication have kept him in the conversation, even if younger, more talented players were coming through the ranks.
If Labate were to suit for the Canucks, it would definitely be a feel good, full circle moment, demonstrating it’s never too late to make something out of your career. Labate currently has 3 points in 4 games for the Abbotsford Canucks this season, and will be looking to add to his NHL point tally soon.
