Edmonton Oilers forward Kasperi Kapanen sustained an injury in today’s game against the Detroit Red Wings on an embarrassing play.

This injury will have some significance to the Oilers not only for missing the speedy winger, but because other players returning from injuries will soon affect some roster decisions. Perhaps Kapanen’s injury puts another hold on those calls.

Midway through the second period, Kapanen was looking to finish a check near on the end-boards, but missed his target and went flying into the boards hard. He was slow to get up, and didn’t return to the game afterward.

Coach Knoblauch didn’t have an update on Kapanen’s condition following the game, but did imply that he suffered an injury, and spoke about what a loss that is for the Oilers.

No update on Kapanen. What is a big deal is, Kapanen. Kapanen’s been playing really well for us, giving us a little more energy, speed, getting in on the forecheck. Really liked his game, so hopefully it’s not a long-term injury.

– Coach Knoblauch

Kapanen does bring the speed and energy that Knoblauch has outlined as inherent skills, but plenty of oilers fans have been critical about what he actually brings with the puck. It’s possible that he was trending to be a healthy scratch.

If Kapanen is going to miss any time with injury, that could delay the Oilers having to make a transaction to clear a roster spot. We’ll see in the coming days if there’s an update on his condition, as the Oilers play their next game on Tuesday against the Ottawa Senators.
