The injury appeared to happen late in the second period, when Tanev departed for the locker room just before the end of the frame, and the team announced at the beginning of the third period that he would not return to action.
Tanev finished with 5:57 of ice time with one blocked shot and a minus-1 rating.
The 35-year-old Toronto native has one assist in seven games this season, his second with the Maple Leafs.
The veteran, in his 16th NHL season, has 36 goals and 209 points across 873 NHL games spent with the Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, Dallas Stars and the Maple Leafs.
