The Vancouver Canucks were well known for not having any center depth entering this NHL season, now with several injuries, especially to Filip Chytil, they are in code red up the middle, and they have to find a solution fast.”However, as the 2025-26 season began, Elias Pettersson began to look like he did last season, not engaged in the play and a bit slow, which began to worry some, but one person who isn’t too bothered by his start is Jim Rutherford, the team’s President of Hockey Operations.”-Jaxon
Vancouver Canucks are desperate to find a center after catching the injury bug.
The TSN staff discussed the pressure the Canucks are feeling right now being so thin up the middle. After Filip Chytil’s injury it’s uncertain what the rest of the season is going to look like with the current lineup. It adds even more pressure to Elias Pettersson to start turning things around.
“They were hoping that Chytil would stay healthy long enough to buy them some time. He’s certainly more than capable and has proven in the NHL that he can be a proven No. 2 centre. But this young guy, who is 26 years old, has been through some dark and difficult times, specific to concussion protocols. So, he’s in there one more time and they don’t know how long he’s going to be away.”-TSN
This isn’t a surprise to anyone who has been following the team all summer. It has been said multiple times that one injury can derail the whole team with how it is currently set up, and now they have several. The Canucks GM Patrick Allvin did not want to overspend on a 2nd line center, meanwhile Pettersson isn’t even playing like a first or second line center, rather than slightly overpaying for one, they made their lives that much harder with the situation they find themselves in.
“That’s why you see Allvin talking publicly about the need to do something at centre ice. The problem is that there are so many other NHL clubs also looking for a No. 2 or No. 3 centre. So, the market is incredibly thin in that area and Allvin knows that.”-TSN
Allvin’s GM abilities will be on full display as he needs to get creative and find a solution to this huge problem the Canucks have right now. Chytil’s timeline to return is uncertain, it can be two weeks, it can be two months. The Canucks cannot last two months with their current lineup.
