Ottawa Senators

The Senators recalled goaltender Leevi Merilainen from the AHL’s Belleville Senators on Thursday and assigned goalie Mads Sogaard to Belleville.

Merilainen began the season as the backup to starting netminder Linus Ullmark but struggled in his only start, allowing seven goals to the Buffalo Sabres in an 8-4 loss on Oct. 15.

The 6-foot-2 goalie was assigned to Belleville four days later, where he went 1-1-0 with a 3.50 goals-against average and .897 save percentage before being recalled.

Merilainen was a key cog in helping the Senators return to the playoffs for the first time since 2016-17 last season, going 8-3-1 with a 1.99 GAA and .925 save percentage in his stint with the NHL club.

The Senators are taking on the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday with Ullmark expected to start, according to Postmedia’s Bruce Garrioch.

Ullmark has a 2-3-1 record this season with a 3.80 GAA and .854 save percentage.
