SALT LAKE CITY – Registering their first five-game winning streak in franchise history on Thursday night, the Utah Mammoth outlasted St. Louis in a regulation shootout with 11 goals between the two teams.
In addition to a hat-trick from Logan Cooley, Captain Clayton Keller came up big with two pivotal goals to secure a 7-4 victory in his hometown.
Here are the key takeaways from Utah’s fifth straight victory.
Logan Cooley was unstoppable against the Blues in a breakout performance with his first Utah Hatty
After somewhat of an underwhelming performance through the first seven games of the season, 21-year-old forward Logan Cooley erupted in St. Louis, registering his first Utah hat-trick in less than five minutes of play.
In addition to being the first natural Hatty (three consecutive goals by one player) in Mammoth history, Cooley demonstrated his versatility by lighting the lamp in a collection of different ways.

Tic-tac-toe setup with so much speed.
This is what they’re capable of. https://t.co/QpV3Trf0bm

Utah leads 4-0 following the initial frame in St. Louis.
We’re witnessing the true potential this team has.
Once these young guys really start flying, Utah is not only a playoff team, but one of the last squads anyone would want to face. https://t.co/LJRuTCPz1z

Cooley needed this kind of a performance.
Amidst a big contract year with a rapidly increasing cap, 92 has elected to bet on himself and prove his worth even more.
However, before tonight, Cooley seemed a little rattled with the weight of that looming contract entirely on his back.
In desperate need of a breakout game, 92 not only found new life, but he completely shook the monkey off his back despite the Blues doing everything in their power to slow him down.
Notably, Cooley also registered his first Utah hat-trick in only six seconds of O-zone possession time.
That’s absurd.
Not only is that incredibly fast and explosive, but it’s also wildly efficient.
“He’s really strong physically,” Head coach Andre Tourigny said of Cooley. “He’s really strong in his battles. His balance is really, really good.”
“His competitiveness helps him a lot.”
Overall, tonight was a demonstration of what 92 is capable of and its awfully hard to deny the fact that he just might be worth north of $10M AAV.
Three goals in less than five minutes and an assist?
Not many 21-year-olds are posting those kinds of numbers.
As Cooley presses forward, he’ll need to use this as a building block as he’s clearly capable of being a point per game type of skater.
Clayton Keller continues to demonstrate why he wears the “C” for the Utah Mammoth
Five-game winning streaks don’t just happen by chance.
They require both a collective team effort and numerous standout performances from key players.
While Cooley obviously stole the spotlight with his first-ever Utah hat-trick on Thursday night, Captain Clayton Keller stepped up in critical moments to help Utah regain momentum and kept St. Louis at an arm’s length.
“We made key plays at key moments. The goal by Keller at the end of the second. The power play goal in the third.”
“Every time they tried to come back, we answered. Really happy about the character of the guys,” Tourigny explained.
The “C” is not placed on just anybody’s sweater in the NHL.
Being a captain requires leadership, accountability, grit, skill, and preferably, an ability to step up when it matters the most.
For Keller, he possesses each of those attributes and has consistently proven this season why he’s Utah’s primary leader.
“He’s an unbelievable player,” Logan Cooley explained. “Great leader for us. He’s super competitive and just gets us going.”
“That was a big goal…I think it was the fifth goal. That was a big one and gave us a lot of momentum going into the next period.”
As Cooley pointed out, Keller’s first goal of the night was critical.
Following a huge momentum swing by the Blues, Keller silenced the noise with a gorgeous snipe to re-establish a three-goal lead.

Notably, that goal would prove to be even more valuable as the game progressed.
After another two-goal push by St. Louis, Keller’s was the only difference in the game during a critical stretch in the third.
He then sealed the deal with a gritty empty-netter that ensured Utah’s first five-game win streak.
The grit to score this. Keller would not be denied.
He is by far the most competitive player on the team, and he made sure his team walked away with 2 points.
That’s what you want from your captain. https://t.co/fTmEkqKN3x

For anyone questioning the captain.
Don’t.
That “C” is right where it belongs as Keller has been a primary driving force during the winning streak with 11 points (4G, 7A).
That’s what captains are meant to do, and Utah has the right guy leading the charge.
The Utah Mammoth bent but didn’t break as they passed the test in St. Louis
While it wasn’t necessarily the most ideal situation at times, the game against St. Louis was a valuable test for Utah.
After taking a commanding four-goal lead in the first period, Utah was then outscored 4-1 by St. Louis through the next 30 minutes of play.
Not great.
However, there’s a lot of value that stemmed from that experience.
First of all, it reiterated that no lead is ever safe in the NHL.
Nothing they didn’t already know, but a good reminder.
“It was obviously a really good start to the first period. When you let of a little bit though, it’s the best league in the world and guys are going to make plays” Cooley explained.
“But in the third we got a few big goals; power play was pretty good. Hopefully keep that up.”
Second, it proved that Utah is now capable of responding to adversity.
A year ago, the Hockey Club not only blew multiple big leads, but they generally lost those types of games.
Now as the Mammoth, it appears that a new ice age has truly dawned as Utah has proven more than once that they can respond to adversity against playoff caliber teams.
“Everything is totally different,” Tourigny said.
“We have a belief that is different…the way we responded to adversity was good. Let’s build off it and move onto the next.”
For any team trying to make the playoffs, those are the games you have to win.
You can’t blow four goal leads and expect to punch your ticket into the postseason.
Additionally, those are the kinds of scenarios you can expect once the playoffs arrive as those games are all about massive momentum swings.
So, while it was a huge win for the Mammoth, it was also a valuable test that they managed to pass, proving that they’re serious about making the playoffs.
Like Tourigny said, this year is different.
Now it’s time to keep proving that every single night.
“We don’t want to get caught up in the moment. We want to stay humble. It’s good we won five. Let’s appreciate the moment & let’s move onto the next one,” Tourigny said.
