The mystery surrounding Joseph Woll’s absence just got far more intriguing. After being off the roster since Training Camp, the Toronto Maple Leafs placed Woll on Long Term Injured Reserve (LTIR) today. The move caught many fans by surprise, especially considering how long the team waited to make the designation.
The #LeafsForever placed Joseph Woll on LTIR, gaining his $3.67M Cap Hit as space in LTIR.
After calling up Mermis, they have $3.63M cap space remaining in LTIR with 23 active players

From ‘Personal Matter’ to LTIR: A Confusing Timeline
The LTIR announcement is shocking because the Maple Leafs initially stated Woll was away from the team for a ‘personal family matter’. The team has been extremely protective of the details, with head coach Craig Berube revealing on Wednesday that he’d not spoken with the goalie at all.
This update is a significant twist, as no one had previously mentioned a health issue for the goalie. In the NHL, LTIR can only be used for a player suffering from an “injury or illness” and not for personal reasons. The designation also requires both the player and the team doctor to certify the individual’s injury status.
What is Really Going On with Joseph Woll?
At this time, the franchise and the goaltender have decided to maintain his privacy in this matter, which is well within their rights. But it begs the question: why would the franchise either mislead or not offer up additional details if the situation changed? Using a scenario where an absence is listed as a ‘personal family situation’ before pivoting to an injury/illness seems disingenuous.
Questions Mount Over Team Transparency and Timing
As a person, more than anything, I hope that Woll and his family are healthy and happy. But as a fan of the team, I have questions about the current process of reporting and transparency. A 6 p.m. news drop on a Thursday, without team confirmation, seems truly odd.
Could Woll Miss the Entire Season?
At this point, the question must be asked: are we getting to the point where Joseph Woll could miss the entire season? I would think at some point today the media will look for some answers from the franchise on the status of Woll.
