Field hockey: Mamaroneck edges John Jay in Cross River NY, see video

Mamaroneck defeated John Jay 2-1 in field hockey action at John Jay High School in Cross River Oct. 14, 2025.

The 2025 Section 1 field hockey season played out with only a few surprises. Teams picked in the preseason to be among the top teams were just that.

But the release Wednesday, Oct. 22 of sectional playoff seedings offered one surprise.

Rye gained the first seed in a super competitive Class B. The Garnets had a very strong season, in part edging longtime Class B power Lakeland by a goal. They fell 3-0 to Class B rival Horace Greeley 3-0 and 4-0 to Class A top seed Mamaroneck. But goal differential is not a factor.

But its strength of schedule vaulted the Garnets over what had seemed to be the likely No. 1, Greeley, which tied Lakeland 0-0, and whose only loss on the season was 1-0 to Mamaroneck.

Due to schedule strength, Lakeland also leapfrogged Greeley into the No. 2 spot, while Greeley was assigned No. 3 out of 12 teams.

Thirty-five teams, in all, made the playoffs.

Mamaroneck’s selection as No. 1 in A was no surprise. The Tigers, who won the 2023 and 2024 state Class A title, went undefeated this year against Section 1 opponents.

The C No. 1 slot was also no surprise. Bronxville, which had a 13-3 regular-season record, falling only to larger schools, Class B Greeley, Lakeland and Yorktown, gained the top spot.

Below are the seedings. Game times are still to be determined.
