Red Wings prospect Nate Danielson had two assists in 2025 AHL debut against Manitoba.
Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman watched Nate Danielson’s AHL debut in Grand Rapids’ 4-0 win over the Manitoba Moose at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids on Friday.
Danielson, who was assigned to Grand Rapids on Friday after suffering an injury during NHL preseason action with Detroit, had two assists and was plus-two against the Moose.
Last season, Danielson, the ninth overall pick in the 2023 NHL draft, had 12 goals, 39 points and was plus-four in 71 games with the Griffins.
Grand Rapids will face the Iowa Wild on Tuesday at Casey’s Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
The 21-year-old ranked among the team leaders in points (6th), assists (2nd) and goals (6th) and also placed among the AHL rookie leaders in assists (T9th), points (T14th) and shorthanded assists (1st).
In three exhibition games with the Red Wings this year, the 6-foot-2, 195-pound native of Red Deer, Alberta, had one goal and two assists and was plus-two.
Monday’s NHL
(At) Pittsburgh 6, St. Louis 3: Sidney Crosby had a goal and two assists to become the ninth player in NHL history with 1,700 points and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the St. Louis Blues 6-3 on Monday night.
Crosby, who accomplished the feat in the fourth-fewest games, is the fourth player in NHL history to reach the mark with one team. Crosby also had his 498th multi-point game, passing Mario Lemieux for the team record and sixth in NHL history on the all-time multi-point list.
Evgeni Malkin had a goal and an assist to extend his point streak to seven games, while Bryan Rust had two goals and an assist. Parker Wotherspoon scored his first with Pittsburgh and Anthony Mantha added his fifth of the season.
Tristan Jarry made 22 saves to help the Penguins get their fifth win in six games. Pittsburgh is 7-2-1 and hasn’t lost in regulation since Oct. 14 at Anaheim.
Jordan Kyrou extended a seven-game point streak with a goal, while Nick Bjugstad and Mathieu Joseph also scored for St. Louis. Joel Hofer stopped 20 shots for the Blues, who lost their fourth straight game.
St. Louis has lost five of their last six games and allowed more than six goals in four of those defeats. The Blues will host the Red Wings on Tuesday.
(At) Ottawa 7, Boston 2: Drake Batherson and Tim Stutzle each had two goals and an assist to lead Ottawa over Boston for its third straight win.
Claude Giroux, Nick Cousins and Fabian Zetterlund also scored, and Leevi Merilainen made 26 saves. It was a redemption effort of sorts for the 23-year-old goalie who allowed seven goals to the Buffalo Sabres on Oct. 15 in his only other start this season.
Morgan Geekie scored on Boston’s first shot of the night after a defensive-zone turnover by the Senators. It was all the offense the Bruins could muster until their final shot of the game when Viktor Arvidsson scored with less than 10 seconds left.
Jeremy Swayman made 17 saves for the Bruins, who are in last place in the Atlantic Division.
Fan at Penguins game hospitalized
Pittsburgh – A fan at Monday night’s game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and St. Louis Blues was taken to a hospital after falling from the upper concourse at PPG Paints Arena.
The incident happened early in the first period after Anthony Mantha’s goal gave the Penguins a 2-0 lead.
Emergency personnel treated the fan, a man who was not identified, before taking him to Mercy Hospital, located a few blocks from the arena.
Play was not halted at any time while the man was being treated. Pittsburgh police told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that the man was in critical condition.
“Our concerns remain with the individual and his family at this time,” the Penguins said in a statement.
The fall was the third such incident at a Pittsburgh sporting event this year.
In May, Kavan Markwood fell over the railing atop the 21-foot-high Clemente Wall and onto the field at PNC Park late in a game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago Cubs. Markwood spent several days in the hospital but did make a recovery. An acquaintance of Markwood was later charged with providing alcohol to Markwood, who was 20 at the time of the incident.
On Saturday night, a worker at Acrisure Stadium, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers, suffered injuries to his legs when he fell approximately 50 feet while doing work near the stadium’s scoreboard.
Hurricanes battling early injury wave
Raleigh, N.C. – The injuries piled up quickly during the Carolina Hurricanes’ six-game road trip out West, enough so that a reporter asked coach Rod Brind’Amour whether he felt like he left with one team and came back with a different one.
“Good way to put it, yeah,” Brind’Amour said Monday. “It did actually. I don’t know how many guys went out there, but it just felt like every day there was something bad happening.”
The Hurricanes are preparing to play Vegas on Tuesday night in their first home game since Oct. 11. The question is exactly how their lineup will look, both against the Golden Knights and in the games that follow due to a line of injuries.
The list included losing defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere to lower-body injury in the win at Los Angeles on Oct. 18. Offseason blue-line acquisition K’Andre Miller was a late scratch with his own lower-body injury before Thursday’s win at Colorado, then forwards Eric Robinson and William Carrier exited that game early due to injury.
That added to a list that already included goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov (lower body) having yet to play, while top defenseman Jaccob Slavin (lower body) has been out since exiting early against Philadelphia in Game 2.
The good news for Carolina was Gostisbehere and Kochetkov were practicing Monday. Brind’Amour said he didn’t expect Miller to play against Vegas, but noted: “I think he’s around the corner.”
Brind’Amour said Slavin is “a little ways away.” He had said before Saturday’s loss at Dallas that Robinson and Carrier could be out longer-term, but said Monday neither are expected to need surgery and didn’t offer an exact timeline.
Carolina had to weave in multiple call-ups and reserves in the lineup, including forward Bradly Nadeau – a 20-year-old former first-round draft pick – and 2021 seventh-rounder Joel Nystrom making his NHL debut after Miller’s late scratch at Colorado during the road trip. Or there was 27-year-old goaltender Brandon Bussi making his first three career starts in net during the trip with Kochetkov out.
“You have to be excited for the guys who maybe haven’t gotten those minutes earlier, and now you get more opportunities,” top-line center Sebastian Aho said, adding: “I think you just have to look at it as an opportunity.”
Still, it has called for adjustments, with Brind’Amour noting “the game suddenly looks a little different” with the Hurricanes having to defend more compared to maintaining their typical puck-possession pressure in the offensive zone. That included tinkering with five forwards on the power play amid injuries to Gostisbehere and Miller, a unit already struggling to a 2-for-29 start (6.9%) this year.
Carolina won four of six on the Western swing, while both Aho and forward Jordan Martinook met the idea of frustration due to injuries with the equivalent of a shrug.
“There’s 31 teams that aren’t feeling sorry for us in our situation,” Martinook quipped after Monday’s practice.
