A Vancouver Canucks rival is reportedly ‘keeping an eye’ on forward Kiefer Sherwood, who is in the final year of his contract and will become a free agent on July 1st.Amid injury issues to their forward group throughout the month of the National Hockey League’s 2025-26 season, forward Kiefer Sherwood has stepped up in a big way and as of Saturday morning, is in a seven-way tie for first in goals with nine in 12 games. The Columbus, Ohio native is setting himself up nicely for a big payday next summer thanks to his strong start to the season, but it could end up backfiring for the Vancouver Canucks, as they’re reportedly hesitant to get a deal done with him and his camp because it might end up costing them more than they’re willing to pay.

“There’s a little bit of hesitancy; he keeps this up he’s probably in the $4m maybe $5m range depending on term, I think the Canucks are, or were anyway…weary…allocating those types of cap dollars” David Pagnotta said this week.

Hypothetically, if the Vancouver Canucks were to fall well out of the playoff picture in the Western Conference, General Manager Patrik Allvin could get a decent return in a trade involving Kiefer Sherwood, if, and it’s a big if, the 30-year-old can sustain this level of play.

Whether it’s via trade or on the free agent market next summer, it appears that one of Vancouver’s rivals might be interested in Kiefer Sherwood, that being the Edmonton Oilers.

During a recent appearance on Oilers Now, Bob Stauffer reported that the Edmonton Oilers are ‘keeping an eye’ on Vancouver Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood.

“According to Bob Stauffer on Oilers Now this week, the Oilers are keeping an eye on Kiefer Sherwood on the Canucks.

He scored 2 goals against them on the weekend and he has 3 goals tonight.” Puckin’ Around Podcast said on X.

From an Edmonton Oilers perspective, they would probably be better off waiting until the free agent market opens on Canada Day to make a push for Kiefer Sherwood as trying to acquire him via trade, especially within the division, would cost significantly more than it would be for Patrik Allvin to send him elsewhere in the league, perhaps Toronto, for example.

Best case scenario for the Vancouver Canucks and their fans is that they can get a deal done with Kiefer Sherwood that both sides are happy about and that’ll keep him in the Lower Mainland for several years to come.
