Reaves suffered the injury during the Sharks’ 5-2 win over the New Jersey Devils on Thursday. In the second period, Reaves was sent in on a breakaway and fell over the top of Devils goalie Jake Allen.
Coach Ryan Warsofsky said the forward suffered a lower-body injury on the play. The San Jose Sharks winger was spotted in a walking boot by Curtis Pashelka of the Mercury News.
Warsofsky talked about the presence that Reaves brings to his Sharks team before Saturday’s game.

“We’ll miss his presence. We’ll miss his energy in the room, his Veteran Experience,” Warsofsky said. “He’s almost like a fifth coach out there, as far as helping our younger players throughout the game, in different situations. He’s a big loss for us. Like I said, not just on the ice, but off the ice. We’ll have to have some guys step up.”
Warsofsky talked about how Reaves is detailed and understands the San Jose Sharks’ defensive systems well.
“He knows the structure pretty well. He’s smart. That’s probably surprised me the most is how structured and detailed he is without the puck,” Warsofsky said. “He’s very well aware of what’s going on in the game. He’s got a high hockey IQ, and that’s probably surprised me the most.”
Cardwell can help with the PK
It is unclear whether Cardwell will play for the Sharks against the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday, but if he is, he’ll bring the tools needed to fill a void.

The Sharks’ penalty kill has struggled this season at 65.8%, which ranks 30th in the NHL. Like Reaves, Cardwell possesses a combination of high motor and strong hockey IQ.
Cardwell made an impression during the preseason and the end of the 24-25 NHL season. In six NHL games last season, Cardwell had one goal. Through seven games in the AHL this season, Cardwell has two goals and two assists.
In other Sharks news, Timothy Liljegren could miss Sunday’s game due to an upper-body injury. The defenseman was hit in the face with a puck on the bench during the first period against the Colorado Avalanche.
