Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid was rooting for the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 7 of the World Series, despite playing in an NHL game at the same time.
Sports fans from across Canada were tuned into the winner-takes-all World Series game between the Jays and the LA Dodgers. It dominated the attention of fans across all sports, which meant that everything else going on in the sporting world took a bit of a backseat on Saturday night.
The Oilers seemed to understand this as well, as they were broadcasting a live feed of the Blue Jays game on the Rogers Place jumbotron while the team was playing against the Chicago Blackhawks.
Fans in the arena seemed glued to the action, even with an NHL game happening right in front of them. After the game, McDavid admitted to reporters that he was watching in between shifts as well.
“That was really, really strange,” McDavid said of the Jays game being shown on the Jumbotron. “Strange to have it on during the game, listening to the crowd, was distracting for sure.
“It was bizarre, I found myself watching the Jays game sitting on the bench. Listening to the crowd while I’m on the ice… Historic moment, couldn’t be more gutted for those guys.”
“Still some things to clean up.”

McDavid, like so many Blue Jays fans across the country, was disappointed with the heartbreaking result. He said that, with the Oilers having lost two straight years in the Stanley Cup Final, he knows better than most what those Blue Jays players are feeling in the aftermath of coming so close, but still ending up just shy of the ultimate goal.
“We know what that feels like,” McDavid said. “It’s been a fun run, they’ve given Canada a lot to cheer about, they should be very proud of themselves.
“That’s what sports is all about, bringing people together. Those guys can be very proud, hold their heads high; it’s a special group.”
For a moment, however, the Rogers Place crowd seemed to think that the Jays had actually won it all in the ninth inning after infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa seemingly scored.
A huge roar went out throughout the crowd, and Oilers play-by-play man Jack Michaels even proclaimed victory before then correcting himself as IKF was called out at home. The Dodgers would go on to win it on the back of a Will Smith solo home run in the 11th inning.

It was certainly a strange situation at Rogers Place on Saturday night, and certainly not the way fans wanted things to go. While the Oilers managed to nab a 3-2 OT victory over the Blackhawks, many left the rink upset that the World Series title remains south of the border.
