The Ottawa Senators had a mixed start to the 2025-26 NHL season, with a 6-5-2 record. The front office has seen one of its stars reject a massive extension offer.

On Saturday, Travis Green’s team lost 3-4 against the Montreal Canadiens (9-3-0), which placed them in third place in the Atlantic Division with 14 points after 13 games.

Among the team’s most productive men so far are Drake Batherson (15 points in 10 games), Tim Stützle (14 points, 13 games), and Shane Pinto (12 points, 13 games).

The latter is generating headlines because he is playing the second and final year of his contract with a $3.75 million cap hit.

According to recent reports, negotiations continue, but Pinto, 24, has already rejected a massive offer.

Senators’ Shane Pinto Turns Down $52 Million Offer

The Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch revealed that in mid-October, the Senators’ front office made an eight-year, $52 million offer with a $6.5 million cap hit, which was rejected by Pinto.

“Extension talks continue. They held talks this offseason, but they were shelved before the start of camp as they couldn’t bridge the gap,” Garrioch said. “Source said that in the middle of October, the Senators made an eight-year, $52 million offer – a $6.5 million cap hit.”

The same report details that the center could be looking for an annual salary of around $7.1 million and $8.35 million.

“Talk around the league is that Pinto could be looking for between Dylan Cozens‘ $7.1 million and Tim Stützle‘s $8.35 million,” Garrioch added.

Another issue still to be resolved is the duration of the contract. Garrioch questions Pinto’s willingness to sign a new eight-year deal, pointing out that a shorter-term contract makes more sense for the forward.

“Pinto has to determine the term as well. Does he want short-term, or does he want to stay in Ottawa for eight years? Brady Tkachuk‘s contract is up after the 2027-28 season. Some think a three-to-six-year deal makes sense for Pinto.”
