The Vancouver Canucks are reportedly hesitant when it comes to getting a potential contract extension done with Kiefer Sherwood before he becomes a UFA on July 1st.While the Vancouver Canucks’ focus is on the 2025-26 season and getting back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs after missing out last year, it’s never too early for the club to take a look at their contract situation and start thinking about which unrestricted free agents they’d like to keep and who they could offload ahead of the trade deadline in March.

Without a doubt, the Vancouver Canucks are hoping that they can find some common ground on a new deal with forward Kiefer Sherwood, who is coming off the best year of his NHL career in 2024-25 and has six goals in 11 games to start this season.

Just a few days into the NHL’s free agency window in July, the Vancouver Canucks reportedly began preliminary discussions on an extension with Kiefer Sherwood and his representatives, but after changing agents before the 2025-26 season began, nothing has been done on the contract front.

“In a recent appearance on Sportsnet 650 (audio link), GM Patrik Allvin indicated that he has had preliminary discussions about a contract extension with Sherwood’s camp.” Pro Hockey Rumors said.

Vancouver Canucks reportedly hesitant in getting contract extension done with Kiefer Sherwood

During a recent appearance on Inside Sports, David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period revealed that the Vancouver Canucks are a bit hesitant in getting a contract extension completed with Kiefer Sherwood mainly due to the fact that it could cost the club more than they’d like to spend.

Pagnotta went on to add that if Sherwood is able to sustain his current level of play throughout the season, he could be looking at a deal in the $4-5 million range annually, which is a pretty big jump when compared to the $1.5 million he’s earning this year.

“There’s a little bit of hesitancy; he keeps this up he’s probably in the $4m maybe $5m range depending on term, I think the Canucks are, or were anyway…weary…allocating those types of cap dollars” Pagnotta said.

Sherwood, a native of Columbus, Ohio, has been an important piece on both sides of the puck since coming to Vancouver in the summer of 2024 and hopefully, Patrik Allvin can find a way to keep him around at a cap hit that both sides are comfortable with.
