Vancouver Canucks goaltender Thatcher Demko is receiving early consideration for a major National Hockey League award thanks to his solid start to the 2025-26 season. After dealing with numerous injury issues dating back to April of 2024, Vancouver Canucks goaltender Thatcher Demko entered the 2025-26 season healthy which is great news for himself and his team’s chances of making it to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
“This summer, just as much work as I was putting in in the gym, I was putting the same amount of work into the mental side of things, too. Last year was difficult and, you know, I’m a human being. You naturally just start to question things and you start getting worried about different things and different facets of your life. Being able to really slow down and have another child and have some perspective again, slowly start to feel like myself again, that confidence just kind of came hand in hand.” Demko said.
The San Diego, California native has had a pretty good start to the season which has not only put him in the mix for the US Olympic roster, but is also in early contention for one of the league’s major awards when all is said and done next spring.

In a recent article for ESPN, Greg Wyshynski polled members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association to see who they think should be the winners of all major awards in the National Hockey League early on this season.
For the Vezina Trophy, which is handed out annually to the league’s best goaltender, they believe that if the season ended right now, the award would go to Logan Thompson of the Washington Capitals, with Jakub Dobes (Montreal Canadiens) and Connor Hellebuyck (Winnipeg Jets) being runners-up.
As for Thatcher Demko, he also got some consideration for the award and even received first place votes from some of the Professional Hockey Writers Association members, who believe that he is playing his way onto the United States’ Olympic roster, which is set to be announced in early January.
“Another goalie who received multiple first-place votes was Thatcher Demko of the Vancouver Canucks, who is healthy and playing well, with a .918 save percentage and a 2.41 goals-against average. Demko is on a mission to play himself into the Team USA goalie battery for the 2026 Olympics.” Wyshynski said.
Demko, 29, has a 5-4-0 record in nine games for the Vancouver Canucks this season, along with a 2.57 goals against average and a .912 save percentage.
If Thatcher Demko can play like he did two years ago, when he finished as the runner-up for the Vezina Trophy, not only will he be in the mix when the award is handed out in June, but the Vancouver Canucks will also have a chance at returning to the Stanley Cup Playoffs after missing out in the spring.
