Red Wings draft pick Max Plante is at the top of the NCAA scoring list.
A second-round pick by Detroit in the 2024 NHL draft, Plante, 19, is averaging nearly two points per game with No. 10-ranked University of Minnesota-Duluth (8-2-0).
Plante, a five-foot-11, 180-pound center, has nine goals and 19 points in 10 games.
Plante is one point ahead of Penn State’s Charlie Cerrato and J.J. Wiebusch, who will face No. 1 Michigan State at Munn Ice Arena on the weekend.
The Friday and Saturday games will also feature Penn State’s Gavin McKenna, the consensus No. 1 overall pick in 2026. He has three goals and 13 points in 10 games.
Plante’s older brother, Zam, is fourth in NCAA scoring with 16 points followed by Michigan’s Michael Hage at 15 points and teammate Will Horcoff at 14 points.
Zam Plante, 21, was just added to the U.S. Collegiate Selects roster at the Spengler Cup from Dec. 26-31.
Zam and Max’s dad, Derek Plante, played eight years in the NHL with 96 goals in 450 games and was a member of the 1999 Stanley Cup champion Dallas Stars.
Flat Rock’s Bergeron at World U17 Challenge
Flat Rock’s Ty Bergeron is scoreless after two games with Team USA at the World U17 Challenge in Truro, Nova Scotia.
The U.S. beat Canada Red, 6-5, in a shootout on Tuesday.
Bergeron has two assists in 12 games with the first-place Muskegon Lumberjacks in the United States Hockey League.
Keller, Simms to represent U.S.
Farmington Hills’ Megan Keller and Plymouth’s Kirsten Simms will represent the United States in the 2025 Rivalry Series against Canada.
The four-game series will begin Thursday at Rocket Arena in Cleveland (7 p.m., NHL Network).
They’ll meet again at KeyBank Center in Buffalo on Saturday (7 p.m., NHL Network) before playing two games at the Rogers Center in Edmonton Dec. 10 and 13.
Tuesday’s NHL
Philadelphia 5, (at) Montreal 4 (SO): Bobby Brink scored twice, Trevor Zegras had the shootout winner and the Flyers won after blowing a three-goal lead.
Nikita Grebenkin and Cam York also scored for Philadelphia. York added an assist, Zegras had two helpers and Dan Vladar stopped 16 shots.
Kirby Dach scored twice for Montreal. Ivan Demidov had a goal and an assist, and Nick Suzuki also scored. Sam Montembeault rebounded from a shaky start to make 38 saves.
Boston 4, (at) N.Y. Islanders 3 (SO): Marat Khusnutdinov tied it late in the third period and had the lone shootout goal, helping the Bruins to their fourth straight victory.
Viktor Arvidsson and Pavel Zacha also scored for Boston. Jeremy Swayman made 25 saves.
Bo Horvat scored twice for New York. Anthony Duclair also scored, and 18-year-old defenseman Mathew Schaefer hadan assist. Ilya Sorokin stopped 23 shots.
Utah 2, (at) Buffalo 1 (OT): Clayton Keller scored 47 seconds into overtime to lift the Mammoth to a 2-1 victory over the Sabres.
Nick Schmaltz also scored, and Karel Vejmelka made 17 saves for Utah and added an assist on the winning goal.
Noah Ostlund scored and Lyon made 33 saves for Buffalo. The Sabres have one win in their last five games, which each went to overtime or shootout, and have points in seven straight.
Carolina 3, (at) N.Y. Rangers 0: Pyotr Kochetkov made 25 saves in his season debut and Nikolaj Ehlers, Sean Walker and Seth Jarvis scored for the Hurricanes.
Ehlers, who signed with Carolina last summer after 10 seasons with Winnipeg, scored his first goal with the Hurricanes with 6:30 left in the opening period. Walker made it 2-0 with 3:53 to go in the second on a long shot from the right point that eluded goalie Igor Shesterkin.
The Rangers had a three-game winning streak snapped. They are winless at home with just six goals in six games.
(At) Minnesota 3, Nashville 2 (OT): Marcus Johansson scored at 3:38 of overtime with the goal off its moorings and Minnesota overcame a last-second tying goal to beat the Nashville.
Minnesota closed a six-game homestand with consecutive victories after dropping the first four. Kirill Kaprizov and Zeev Buium scored power-play goals for the Wild, and Gustavsson made 32 saves.
Matthew Wood also scored for weary Nashville, with the Predators coming off a 5-4 overtime loss to Vancouver at home Monday night. Annunen stopped 22 shots in his third game of season.
(At) Dallas 4, Edmonton 3 (SO): Wyatt Johnston had three assists before making the game-ending shot in a shootout as Dallas beat Edmonton, in their first meeting since the Oilers eliminated them in the Western Conference Final for the second season in a row.
Mikko Rantanen had two goals and an assist for the Stars.
Leon Draisaitl, Connor McDavid and Vasily Podkolzin scored for Edmonton, which led 2-0 only 7:07 in while playing for the third time in four days.
