Coach Todd McLellan gave the Detroit Red Wings today off after they returned from a five-games-in-eight-days road trip to the Western Conference.

They will need the rest because Friday their home against the New York Rangers starts a span of 12 games in 22 days. Nine of those games are at Little Caesars Arena. However, the volume will test the Red Wings’ endurance. This heavy stretch results from the condensed NHL necessitated by the NHL participation in the 2026 Olympics in February.

What it all means is the Red Wings will have 32% of their schedule completed by the end of this month.  We should have a good idea about how this team stacks up by Thanksgiving.
