Former NHL coach Bruce Boudreau has suggested that Nazem Kadri could return to the Toronto Maple Leafs to strengthen their center position.

With the Calgary Flames struggling early in the season, Kadri remains a frequent name in trade talks. He reached his 1,000th NHL game on Wednesday. Kadri is currently under contract for a seven-year, $49 million deal with Calgary.

His contract carries a modified 13-team no-trade clause, meaning the Flames can trade him to any of the other 18 teams without his approval. Speaking on TSN, Boudreau explained why Toronto would be an ideal destination (1:10 onwards):

“Well, I think Toronto needs another top-six forward. And Nazem Kadri coming home would bring instant excitement to a team that seems to be in the doldrums right now,” Boudreau said.

He added:

“And I think he could be the best bumper spot guy on the power play and make the power play a lot better again because he’s really good at it. So, he would be in a good spot coming to Toronto, and they would have so much depth at center they could play against anybody.”

Drafted No. 7 overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2009 NHL draft, Nazem Kadri had a spell of ten seasons with the team, accumulating 357 points through 161 goals and 196 assists in 561 games.

Carolina Hurricanes potentially on Nazem Kadri’s no-trade list

The Carolina Hurricanes have been actively trying to acquire a high-end player. However, according to NHL insider Nick Kypreos, the Hurricanes are one of the 13 teams on Kadri’s no-trade list.

This scenario makes a trade to Carolina highly unlikely, even if both teams wanted it.

“Kadri has been linked to multiple teams, but we have to specifically mention the Carolina Hurricanes, who have been in a relentless pursuit for a top player since falling short on Mikko Rantanen and Mitch Marner last season.””For now, the Hurricanes seem an unlikely destination for Kadri, as they are on his 13-team no-trade list,” Kypreos wrote in his Sportsnet column.

Nazem Kadri has racked up 10 points through three goals and seven assists this season.
