The Colorado Avalanche have had an electric start to the 2025-26 season. Their 21 points are most in the league and they’re the only team that has just one regulation loss on the season. Their 8-1-5 record has fans in the Mile High City excited for what’s to come this season, and they’re gaining recognition around the league as a freight train that’s going to be tough to stop.
Last week, the Avs slotted in at No. 3 in the NHL’s Super 16, the league’s spin on power rankings. Only the top half of the league gets ranked so fans across the continent can see how the best teams are stacking up against each other week in and week out.
The Avs went 2-0-1 in the three games since those last rankings dropped, and put together performances strong enough to vault them up to the No. 1 spot over Vegas and New Jersey, who held the top spots ahead of Colorado last week.
The Avalanche have been dominant this season, highlighted by a +13 goal differential that is the top mark in the league. Cale Makar is playing so well that he’s in the conversation for the Hart trophy, not just the Norris, Nathan MacKinnon’s 20 points are tied for the third-best mark in the league, MacKenzie Blackwood is back in between the pipes and the power play has taken a jump up after a lethargic start to the season.
The next week will be a big one for the Avalanche. They start with a road clash against Edmonton, ranked 15th in the Super 16, on Saturday night before heading to Vancouver and then returning home to host Anaheim, ranked ninth. If they can win two of those games, especially against Edmonton and Anaheim, they should be in the top spot for next week’s Super 16.
