Todd McLellan: Updates on Red Wings James van Riemsdyk, Nate Danielson

Detroit Red Wings coach Todd McLellan, Sept. 30, 3025 in Detroit.

Todd McLellan said at the start of October Nate Danielson was top of the list to make the Detroit Red Wings out of camp.

An injury to the team’s 2023 first-round pick delayed that, but with the team looking to break out of a two-game slump, Danielson was called up shortly before the game on Sunday, Nov. 9, against the Chicago Blackhawks.

All the forwards skated Saturday. During Sunday’s warmups, Danielson did line rushes on a line with Marco Kasper and Mason Appleton. Forwards Michael Rasmussen and Jonatan Berggren appeared to be scratched from the lineup.

Danielson, 21, is a solid two-way center/wing who plays a responsible game at both ends of the ice. McLellan said last month that Danielson, “would have had an outstanding opportunity to make the team,” before a wrist injury suffered during an exhibition game derailed Danielson’s camp.

Instead, the Wings began the season with rookies Axel Sandin Pellikka, Emmitt Finnie and Michael Brandsegg-Nygård. Brandsegg-Nygård has since been sent to the minors.
