Gary Bettman and the NHL are clearly trying to expand the NHL to the world, and now they’ve opened an office outside of North America, claiming a pivotal moment.

Since the end of the global pandemic in 2020, the NHL have made their intentions known on a worldwide scale, with the league hoping to market themselves to a global audience by playing outside of North America, more than once per season at some points.

This year, we will see the Penguins and Predators play in Sweden this coming week, with the NHL continuing to explore the market in Europe as they have teams take their games overseas as a part of the highly successful Global Series.

Gary Bettman Names Pivotal Moment In Expansion Talks

While plenty of people have been talking about the NHL expanding to having more teams in North America, Commissioner Gary Bettman and Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly have their eyes on the global market, and now, they’ve marked a pivotal moment in international expansion.

Recently, the NHL officially opened an office in Zurich, their first ever beyond the borders of North America, with Daly naming this as a moment in time as the league look to expand and grow t he game internationally.

By investing in a new office, we’re positioning ourselves to further, and better, grow the game… outside of North America.

It’s unclear exactly what the NHL’s plans are after opening this new office, but with so much talent in Europe, there’s always a chance that this leads to the league potentially looking to influence a new league over there.

Ultimately though, this can only be a good thing for the NHL, as the on-ice product has been fantastic in recent years, and with the hope of growing the game globally, this is just another step in that process for the NHL.
