Nathan MacKinnon has been on first for the Colorado Avalanche throughout the first month of the NHL season. His 29 points are the most in the league as he’s led the Avalanche to 25 total points through 16 games, also the most in the league.

Last week, the Avalanche went 3-0 with victories over the Lightning, Oilers and Canucks, and MacKinnon totaled 10 points on his own. He assisted on a goal against Tampa Bay, had two goals and two assists against Edmonton, and had two goals and three assists against Vancouver. As a result, he was named as the NHL’s First Star of the Week.

Chicago’s Connor Bedard was the second star, and Anaheim’s Leo Carlsson was the third.

The Avalanche star is now in first place in the race for both the Art Ross Trophy (most points in the league) and Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy (most goals in the league). He hasn’t won either of those awards throughout his illustrious 13-year career.

This is the second time that a player rocking the burgundy and blue sweater has been named as one of the stars of the week throughout the first month of the season. Scott Wedgewood, the backup goalie who was starting in place of the injured Mackenzie Blackwood at the start of the season, was named as the third star a few weeks ago for a stellar stretch of games in between the pipes for the Avs.

MacKinnon and the Avs will be back in action on Tuesday night at Ball Arena against the Anaheim Ducks. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. MT, and the game will be televised on TNT.
