The punk rock community came together to raise back the money lost from a brazen burglary.
SEATTLE — On Friday morning, a pair of burglars targeted Kraken Bar, a beloved punk rock bar in Seattle’s University District.Â
“They use crowbars and broke through right here,” said Lizzie Franks, a bartender.
Breaking through the front door, they went straight for the till and any cash inside.Â
“They were definitely just after a quick cash grab, trying to get as much as they could, as fast as possible,” Franks said. “The money was in the till, which we’re not going to do anymore.”
The two men, one taller and the other wearing a Dallas Cowboys hat, were caught on the surveillance cameras.
A photo shows them also go after a safe, in the back of the business.
It had a lot of cash inside from grant funding intended for a music festival called Cloudbreak and $700 in quarters for their pinball machine tournament.
“There was grant money in there for to support the bands that are, that are coming through. There was just backup funds. There was, you know, tip money,” Franks said.
While the thieves got away with a lot, the Kraken Bar staff said the support from patrons came back two fold.Â
“Small businesses in Seattle, especially, venues are struggling all over, and something like this can be super devastating. and we were so lucky to have such an incredible community support us. and like the punk rock scene is, like, absolutely wonderful and supportive and and caring,” Franks said.
The community raised more than their donation goal and the music festival, Cloudbreak, is scheduled for another weekend of music.
“People can support just by coming to a show, coming and playing some pinball. We have open mic on Tuesdays, you know, come grab some food. The food here is incredible, and the music is wonderful, yeah, just coming and hanging out and saying hi, you know,” Franks said.Â
The Kraken Bar filed a police report and hope the thieves are caught.Â
