The Maple Leafs are looking to make some big changes this season, and now a top insider revealed they almost made a major splash a year ago.
Last season was another disappointing run for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and while they again showed promise in the regular season, they fell short when it mattered most in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, falling in the second round to the Florida Panthers.
In the off-season, they may very few high profile additions, and with a major need down the middle if they are to contend again in 2025/26, they’re a team to watch out for in trade talks in the months ahead.
Now, Elliotte Friedman has mentioned a very intriguing name in St. Louis Blues centre Brayden Schenn on the latest 32 Thoughts podcast, revealing that Brad Treliving and the Maple Leafs were chasing him hard at the deadline a season ago.
Brayden Schenn’s name’s been out there; Ottawa went after him a couple years ago; Toronto went after him last year; Schenn’s got less protection this year.
In 2024, Schenn had a full no-trade clause, but from 2025 onwards, that has now become a 15-team no trade list, and with the Blues struggling early in the season, there’s a good chance that he’ll be made available at some point again this season.
Ultimately, there’s a good chance that Brad Treliving still has interest in the veteran to join the solid centre group they’ve started in Toronto, and given that they wanted him a season ago, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they were one of the team’s pushing hardest for the 34-year old.
