Injuries suffered by Grand Rapids Griffins goalies Michal Postava and Sebastian Cossa are a reminder of how important it is that Detroit Red Wings sign Michigan State goalie Trey Augustine immediately after his season.

Augustine made 60 saves last weekend to help the Spartans sweep the No. 4-ranked Penn State squad. That earned him Big Ten First Star of the Week acclaim.

Now a junior, Augustine is enjoying his best collegiate season with a 1.41 goals-against average and .944 save percentage. He’s 7-1 for the No. 1 ranked Spartans.

The Red Wings wanted to sign him last summer, but he wanted to stay and help Michigan State win a national championship. If he spurns the Red Wings again this spring, they will have to assume he plans to head to unrestricted free agency. If he isn’t signed by August after his senior season, he becomes a UFA.

Cossa and Postava are both considered high level prospects, but Augustine could compete with them to be the No. 1 goalie prospect. With Red Wings goalies in their 30s, goalie depth is critical for Detroit.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

As it turns out, playing against a brother in goal isn’t that rare in Red Wings history. Bob Duff has a paywall story detailing how many times it has occurred. To subscribe to DHN+ stories, click here.

The Grand Rapids Griffins‘ eight-game winning streak was halted, and a goalie was injured in the loss.

Red Wings prospect defenseman Nikita Tyurin (140th, 2025) now has played his third game for Moscow Spartak in the KHL and doesn’t look out of place. He’s plus-2 in those games. In 16 games for the Spartak Junior team, Tyurin shows two goals and 11 points in 16 games.
