Jet Greaves and Charlie Coyle made sure the Blue Jackets didn’t go winless on their longest road trip of the season.
Greaves, starting for the second time in as many days, made 22 saves through regulation and overtime plus three more in a shootout decided by Coyle’s goal in the bottom of the fourth round to give the Jackets a 2-1 victory they needed to end a four-game skid.
Adam Fantilli scored in the second period for the Blue Jackets (8-7-1), who overcame a 1-0 deficit after Ryan Winterton gave the Kraken (7-4-5) a 1-0 lead late in the first. Seattle’s Matt Murray was outstanding in net, making 33 saves in defeat.
Each team scored once in the first two periods, starting with Winterton putting Seattle up 1-0 with 3:17 left in the first. After blocking Blue Jackets defenseman Denton Mateychuk’s clearing attempt up the left wing wall, Seattle’s Ben Meyer dragged the puck to the slot before sliding Winterton a backhand pass inside the left circle for a one-timer that beat Greaves.
It took most of the second for the Blue Jackets to pull even, but they finally did with 1:38 left in the period on Fantilli’s goal to cap a power play with a 5-on-3 advantage after back-to-back Kraken penalties on Eeli Tolvanen for tripping and Ryan Lindgren for cross-checking.
Fantilli’s fourth goal of the season and second in the past two games made it 1-1 after two periods. It stayed that score through the remainder of regulation plus overtime. In the shootout, Kirill Marchenko gave the Blue Jackets a lead in the bottom of the second round before Tolvanen tied it in the top of the third.
Murray kept the shootout going with a stop on Sean Monahan in the bottom of the third, but Coyle ended it in the fourth after Greaves stopped Kaapo Kakko in the top half. Coyle’s wrist shot beat Murray into the upper right corner of the net to send the Blue Jackets home feeling much better than they did following a late blown 4-2 lead that led to a 5-4 overtime loss Nov. 11 in Edmonton.
