With the series hanging in the balance now that it’s all tied up at 2, the Leafs have offered an important injury update on starting goaltender Anthony Stolarz.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have seen their dominating 2-0 series lead wiped away after the Florida Panthers took both games on home ice to even the series.
The Leafs didn’t play particularly poorly in Game 3, but they were subjected to some unfortunate bounces while also blowing two 2-goal leads early in the game. However, the same can’t be said about their performance in Game 4, as they came out flat from the moment the puck dropped, leaving Joseph Woll hanging out to dry after a sensational showing from the 26-year-old.A major shift in the series certainly came from the Anthony Stolarz injury, after the hulking netminder received an elbow from Florida Panthers forward Sam Bennett. There was no supplemental discipline handed by the NHL and the Panthers have since used their physicality as an edge over the Leafs.
Unfortunately, Stolarz was knocked out of Game 1 and hasn’t made any massive strides towards a comeback just yet. Joseph Woll has taken over the crease after a great regular season but has looked rather pedestrian with a .893 SV% and a 3.51 GAA.
The Maple Leafs did offer an update on Stolarz earlier today, but it remained bleak at best as he remains without a timetable to return.
“He is progressing. He’s on the ice a little bit, so he’s doing much better.”
With that update, it is certainly still Woll’s net for the foreseeable future as he will need to look to find a way to gather his thoughts and regroup with the series essentially now becoming a best-of-3.
What should give the Leafs a little more hope is that Woll did look a whole lot better in Game 4 as he stopped 35 of the 37 shots fired his way. The Leafs are going to need a repeat of that performance tomorrow night when the Panthers visit Scotiabank Arena for a pivotal swing game.
