Star forward Auston Matthews will miss at least one week with a lower-body injury, according to TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston.
TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reported earlier Thursday that the injury to Matthews was not considered serious.
Roster shuffling so Cowan isn’t expected to play for the Leafs tonight. Matthews and Stolarz both out. Neither considered serious.

Matthews left Tuesday’s game against the Boston Bruins in the second period after taking a hit from Nikita Zadorov that sent him into the boards. However, head coach Craig Berube acknowledged he was not sure if Matthews suffered the injury on the hit.
Berube was no fan of the hit.
“I think it’s a penalty, personally. But I’m not the referee. I don’t like it. I don’t like the hit. [Matthews] is in a vulnerable position. So, whatever. Nothing I can do about it.”
The Boston blueliner was not penalized on the play and told reporters after the game there was no ill intent.
“It was just a normal play. I didn’t really hit him. I hit my right shoulder, 99 per cent of my hits in the NHL are with my right shoulder,” Zadorov said.
“There was really no intention to hurt him. I play hard against top players on the other team, that’s my job.”
Mathews has nine goals and five assists for 14 points in 17 games so far this season.
Stolarz avoids serious injury
Meanwhile, Dreger reported the injury to goaltender Anthony Stolarz is also not considered serious.
He left Tuesday’s game after the first period with an upper-body injury and was replaced by Dennis Hildeby. After the game, Berube said he believed Stolarz was not seriously injured.
Neither he nor Matthews will play Thursday night against the Los Angeles Kings. Neither player was on the ice at the team’s session Thursday morning.
Stolarz has a 3.51 goals-against average and a .884 save percentage in 13 games so far this season.
