San Jose Sharks goalie Alex Nedeljkovic was granted non-roster status as he deals with a personal matter.

Because of this, the Sharks have recalled goaltender Jakub Skarek from the San Jose Barracuda under emergency conditions.

The emergency recall tag is important as Skarek won’t need to pass through waivers if he is with the Sharks for an extended period of time. If this recall were a standard one, Skarek would’ve needed to stay with the club for more than 30 days or play 10 or more games to be eligible.

If the San Jose Sharks did a standard recall, Skarek wouldn’t be waiver eligible, as he cleared waivers during training camp.

Yaroslav Askarov will likely start every game for the Sharks while Nedeljkovic is out. With no back-to-backs until next weekend, there’s no need to put Skarek in a game.

The former New York Islanders goaltender has appeared in only two career NHL games, with one start. In his two appearances, the Sharks’ netminder gave up five goals on 39 shots.

Skarek also played in one preseason game for the Sharks, giving up three goals on 16 shots. He split his appearance with fellow ‘Cuda goalie Gabe Carriere.

In his last appearance with the Barracuda, Skarek pitched a shutout and owns a 4-2 record overall.
