In a not-so-surprising development, the Flyers had another game go to overtime. Shocking, as it was their eighth game to reach overtime in 17 this season.
How they got there? That was a surprise.
Down by two goals in the second and facing another two-goal deficit in the third, the Flyers stayed resilient and found a way to even things up both times. Trevor Zegras, with two goals in regulation and a penalty shot stopped in overtime, was the hero again in the shootout, as the Flyers claimed a 6-5 win over the St. Louis Blues on Friday night.
It took just 1:19 for the Blues to capitalize. Off a neutral-zone turnover, Jordan Kyrou took over and fired a shot past Sam Ersson to make it 1-0 on his sixth of the season.
The Flyers answered back at 8:18. Zegras finished off the rush for his fifth goal of the season.
The Blues got the lead back at 9:42. Jimmy Snuggerud entered as the trailer on a rush off a turnover and scored his fifth of the season to make it 2-1.
Through 20 minutes, shots were 8-8.
At 6:54 of the second, the Blues padded the lead. Off a face-off, Justin Faulk ripped a one-timer for his fourth goal of the season to make it 3-1.
Just 23 seconds later, Christian Dvorak scored on a rebound to cut the lead back to one with his fourth goal of the season.
With 1:36 remaining in the period, the Flyers got the game tied. Zegras deflected a one-timer by Emil Andrae at the front of the net and beat Jordan Binnington to even things at three.
Through two periods, shots were 19-12 in favor of the Flyers.
Just 40 seconds into the third, the Blues regained the lead. Dylan Holloway scored from the left circle to make it 4-3.
At 4:56, the Blues added to the lead. A lost puck battle behind the net allowed Snuggerud to center for Robert Thomas for his third goal of the season to make it 5-3.
But the Flyers remained resilient, cutting the lead back to one at 7:53. Dvorak scored his second off a transition rush to make it 5-4.
Then, at 10:29, the Flyers tied it back up again. Owen Tippett scored for the first time in 12 games, getting his sixth of the season on a one-timer.
The game went to overtime, and after St. Louis possessed the puck for nearly three minutes, Zegras was disrupted at center ice on a clear breakaway and awarded a penalty shot. Binnington made the save, and overtime continued.
When the shootout rolled around, Ersson once again stood tall with saves on Thomas and Snuggerud. Zegras scored on his attempt. Holloway missed the net in the third round and the Flyers claimed the win.
Ersson made 12 saves on 17 shots in the win. Binnington made 26 saves on 31 shots in the loss.
Tippett had a goal and three assists for a four-point game. Zegras and Dvorak each had three points. Andrae had two assists. Thomas, Snuggerud, Kyrou, and Cam Fowler each had two points for the Blues.
The Flyers are right back on the ice on Saturday night to take on the Dallas Stars at 8 p.m.
