Carter Mazur is still out. Two injured goalies. Detroit Red Wings call-ups. Different lineup every night. The Grand Rapids Griffins continue to overcome a myriad of potential problems to extend their best start in franchise history.

Detroit draft pick Carter Gylander, who started the season as a Toledo Walleye goalie, made 21 saves and the Giffins boasted five different goal scorers to down the Toronto Marlies 5-2 and improve the team record to 10-0-0-1. The Griffins have earned at least one point in all 11 games since the season began.

“(Gylander) just keeps getting better,” Grand Rapids coach Dan Watson said. “He’s getting more comfortable every time he sees the net, whether in a game or practice, getting used to the pace of play.”

Both Grand Rapids regulars, Sebastian Cossa and Michal Postava, are out with injury. Gylander is 2-0-1 with a 2.37 GAA and .917 save percentage since taking over the Griffins net. He took over when Postava was injured in a shootout loss to the Chicago Wolves last Sunday. Gylander entered that game early and was able to get the Griffins into the shootout.

The Griffins’ 6-0 home start is also the best in franchise history.

“He’s making saves at key moments,” Watson said.

Cossa Close to Return

Postava will be sidelined for an extended period, but Cossa is practicing. It seems as if the Griffins expect him to play next week. The Griffins have also signed NHL goalie Dustin Tokarski to a tryout contract.

Latvian Eduards Tralmaks scored his fifth goal of the season in the Griffins’ triumph and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard netted his second. He was originally credited with two goals, but after the game he continued to say he never touched the puck. An official scoring change eventually credited the goal to Ian Mitchell.

John Leonard, a Red Wings’ offseason signing, had two points in the game, including an empty netter for his 10th goal in 11 games. Veteran defenseman Erik Gustafsson assisted on the Leonard tally.

Leonard set-up Amadeus Lombardi for his second goal. Lombardi boasts two goals and 11 assists for 13 points. Leonard and Lombardi are candidates to be called up this season if the Red Wings have injuries up front.
