The Scott Wedgewood train is chugging along at full speed for the Colorado Avalanche, and Avs Faithful is fully on board. The 33-year-old goaltender has been phenomenal for the Avalanche through the first portion of the NHL season, and his play has possibly created a goalie battle for the burgundy and blue, a good problem to have.

Wedgewood was outstanding again in the Avs’ 4-1 win over the New York Islanders on Sunday, as he allowed just one goal out of the 29 shots he’s faced. It was the seventh time he’s posted a save percentage of at least .950 this season (14 starts). Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar has plenty of good things to say about his goaltender after the contest.

“I thought both goalies made a couple nice saves,” Bednar said after the contest. “But Wedge[wood] did his best work on the penalty kill. Penalty kill was good. I thought their power play was really good and Wedge was our best penalty killer. To me, that’s the difference in the hockey game. You take some penalties and they created a number of Grade-A chances on the power play and Wedge was the difference maker.”

The Islanders had four cracks at the power play on Sunday, but weren’t able to capitalize on any of them. Wedgewood was sliding all over the crease and made a plethora of elite saves to keep the puck from getting behind him.

HOW DID SCOTT WEDGEWOOD MAKE THAT SAVE!? 😱

Wedgewood has been in the net to start the season while Mackenzie Blackwood, who used to be the starting goalie, has been rehabbing his way back from a lower-body injury. Blackwood has started three games this season, two of which were wins, but has allowed nearly 3.3 goals per game while posting a .870 save percentage. Wedgewood has been allowing under 2.2 goals per game with a .917 save percentage for the season.

Do the Avalanche have a goalie battle on their hands? Wedgewood clearly has the hot hand right now, and there’s no reason to go away from him. But as Blackwood gets healthier and knocks the rust off, would they consider making him the starter again even though Wedge is on a roll? The way Bednar has talked after some of these games, it seems that he wouldn’t do that.

The bottom line is that the Woodshed is arguably the best goaltending duo in the National Hockey League, and is a major reason why the Avalanche have been dominating the rest of the league.
