It wouldn’t be the first time Steve Yzerman reached out to the Blues to make a trade. From Jake Walman to Villi Husso or even Robby Fabbri, the Red Wings have had no problem calling on the Blues to make a trade. With the recent report David Pagnotta put out that the Blues are open to offers, I’ve decided to put together some mock trades that I think the Red Wings and Blues could show some interest in.

David Pagnotta: St. Louis is apparently willing to listen [to trade offers] across the board – The Sheet (11/14)

Depth Trades:

Detroit Receives: Pius Suter

St. Louis Receives: Emmitt Finnie, 2025 2nd round pick

Why: I think Detroit reuniting with Pius Suter could be a fun one. He can play anywhere in the lineup on the left side and be effective. He’s a decent producer and doesn’t consistently play with the same linemates, as well as giving consistent and solid defensive play. Detroit gives up a young and promising Emmitt Finnie for some help now, with the idea that Danielson, Kasper, and MBN will be up soon enough and squeeze him out of a lineup spot.

Detroit Receives: Nick Bjugstad

St. Louis Receives: Elmer Soderblom, 2025 4th round pick

Why: Bjugstad plays a hard-nosed style with a huge frame. His deployments align with Detroit’s bottom six, and his size could add to that “hard to play against” style that McClellan loves. He’s not afraid to throw hits, and given he plays less than 12 TOI per game, his offense isn’t terrible. Detroit swaps one big body for another. Detroit gets experience, St. Louis gets upside. Soderblom is far from the most desirable trade chip, but his performance last season might give some GMs pause.

Top Six Trade:

Detroit Receives: Pavel Buchnevich

St. Louis Receives: Jonatan Berggren, 2025 1st round pick (top 10 protected)

Why: Detroit looks to buy low on the big left wing they’ve needed for a while. While he is playing poorly now, Dobber Frozen Tools has his shooting percentage, PDO, and points/60 as numbers that are expected to bounce back. Detroit needs a top-six talent, and the only way to get one without coughing up something they’re uncomfortable with is to take a risk, and Buchnevich seems to be that.

Big Fish:

Detroit Receives: Robert Thomas

St. Louis Receives: Marco Kasper, Ben Chiarot, 2025 1st round pick

Why: Robert Thomas is a great top 6 centre, and between him and Dylan Larkin, Detroit should have their centre core solidified for the cup window with Danielson filling out as 3C. The cost is Kasper and a really solid Ben Chiarot in the last year of his deal, as well as an unprotected first round pick.
