The Bruins made a roster move ahead of their four-game road trip.

Boston summoned Michael Callahan from Providence on Tuesday. The defenseman has two assists in 12 games for the P-Bruins.

Callahan has appeared in three games with Boston this season.

The Franklin native was called up to the Bruins after Charlie McAvoy’s injury. Coach Marco Sturm said Tuesday that the defenseman would not travel with the team for its upcoming road trip that begins Wednesday in Anaheim against the Ducks.

McAvoy was injured during Saturday’s win over the Montreal Canadiens when a puck deflected off his face. He went down in visible pain and was helped off the ice as he left behind a puddle of blood on the ice.

Sturm did not have an update on McAvoy on Tuesday other than he wouldn’t travel and had no timeline for a potential return.

The coach said he expected a health update on McAvoy either Tuesday or Wednesday. No official word came on his condition Tuesday when the Bruins announced Callahan’s call up.
