A former Detroit Red Wings rugged right-shot defenseman has inked a new deal with a rival in a last-minute decision before the SHL (Swedish Hockey League) season kicks off, and he’s set to join other familiar faces to HockeyTown fans.
Drafted 160th overall in 2008 by the Lightning, defenseman Luke Witkowski played in Tampa Bay and New York (Islanders) before joining the Detroit Red Wings in 2017 free agency.
In February of 2020, the gritty defenseman was dealt to the St. Louis Blues after suiting up for the Red Wings for 65 games, where he tallied one goal, five assists, and the stat that reflects his tough character the most, 58 penalty minutes.
Witowski failed to find an NHL opportunity after his departure from the Red Wings organization, which ultimately led to his arrival in Europe in 2023, where he signed with Finland’s Liiga Club, Tappara.
Fast forwarding just a few years, the former Red Wing continues to find work in the SHL following the latest signing announcement.

In the 2024-25 SHL season, Witowski donned his now-rival’s jersey, alongside current Red Wings defenseman Axel-Sandin Pellikka and Grand Rapids Griffins forward Michael Brandsegg-Nygard.
Joining Brynas on a one-year deal, he joins former Red Wings defensemen Robert Hagg and Gustav Lindstrom.
“Luke Witkowski(4) waits a minute before returning to SHL hockey, signing with rivals Brynas for 2025/2026, the former senior captain WMUHockey will continue to do well”
It seems as if SHL’s Brynas has a liking for former Red Wings, or Detroit, and Steve Yzerman loves his European players.
