DETROIT – The Islanders recalled defenseman Marshall Warren from their AHL affiliate in Bridgeport on Thursday with the possibility the Laurel Hollow product will be in the lineup against the Red Wings tonight at Little Caesars Arena for the conclusion of a seven-game road trip.
It’s the second call-up this season for the 24-year-old Warren.
On Wednesday, the Islanders placed defenseman Alexander Romanov on injured reserve with an upper-body injury. Romanov was hurt late in Tuesday night’s 3-2 win in Dallas when he was driven into the end wall by Mikko Rantanen. The Stars’ winger received a five-minute major for boarding and a game misconduct but no further supplemental discipline from the NHL.
The Islanders were irate with the hit, particularly coach Patrick Roy. But Rantanen said on Wednesday the play happened because he was off-balance and he had reached out to Romanov.
Warren had two assists in two games with the Islanders earlier this season and has two goals and seven assists in 10 games for Bridgeport.
Warren is in his third season in the Islanders’ organization after initially being drafted in the sixth round by the Wild in 2019. He played four seasons at Boston College and then one more for Michigan.
The Islanders enter Thursday night’s match with a 5-1-0 mark on the road trip.
Andrew Gross joined Newsday in 2018 to cover the Islanders. He began reporting on the NHL in 2003 and has previously covered the Rangers and Devils. Other assignments have included the Jets, St. John’s and MLB.
