Stars forward Mikko Rantanen faced no further discipline for his boarding hit earlier in the week on Alexander Romanov of the Islanders.
Rantanen might not be so lucky this time around.
For the second time this week Rantanen was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct for delivering a vicious his against an opponent, this time on Calgary’s Matt Coronato.
At the tail end of the second period as Coronato skated toward the boards for a puck, Rantanen streaked in from behind and stuffed Coronato up against the wall. Coronato’s face/mouth area appeared to come in direct contact with the sharp corner of the board, and he immediately began dripping blood from the face as he skated back across the ice and down the tunnel toward the locker room.

Rantanen was immediately swarmed by the Flames, primarily Jonathan Huberdeau going after him. After a chaotic scene died down, a heaping of penalties were announced by the officiating crew.
Rantanen was given a five-minute major for boarding, a second five-minute major for fighting and a 10-minute game misconduct. Huberdeau received a five-minute fighting major, a two-minute instigating penalty and a 10-minute misconduct as well. The third period began with 4-on-4 play followed by three minutes of Flames power play.
After his 20 minutes of penalties, Rantanen led the league in penalty minutes at the time this article was published.
Rantanen faced no additional punishment from the league after his previous hit on Romanov, but this one appeared significantly more vicious. That, combined with the fact that this is Rantanen’s second misconduct in the span of three games, could potentially lead to a harsher penalty and possibly even a suspension for Rantanen.
Update: A worse-for-the-wear Coronato eventually returned to the Flames’ bench for the third period.
This is not a good look, especially after what happened Tuesday. I would be pretty surprised if Rantanen doesn’t get any further discipline from the league for this.
